TRENT BRIDGE MEDICAL PRACTICE - PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP

Introduction

Our Practice has a Patient Participation Group (PPG).  The PPG meet each month here at the surgery to discuss issues relating to the practice.  If you would like to know more about the PPG please contact the Practice Manager (Mrs L Davis).

The purpose of the PPG is to assist in improving the running of the practice for the benefit of patients and staff, to provide a patient perspective to the practice and to facilitate better two-way communications between patients and the practice.

The group have been working on the 'Terms of Reference' and this was agreed in September 2011. 

In future we hope to widen membership of the group by operating a 'virtual PPG' who will be able to contribute to discussions, and receive communications from the group electronically.  If you would be interested we would really like to hear from you.

The practice would like the PPG to reflect the practice profile in terms of diversity, e.g  age, gender, ethnicity, disability etc. and would therefore particularly welcome the involvement of under-represented groups.

PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG)

The PPG is a group of patients who act as a support and advisory group to the Practice.

The group discuss issues from a patient perspective and can make suggestions for changes or improvements.

 (The group do not deal with individual cases or complaints)

The topics looked at so far by the group include:-

• New practice leaflet
• New practice website
• Initiation of booking appointments on-line and ordering of repeat prescriptions
• Ways of reducing waste medicines
• Improving information about self-help and other local groups and forums
• Patient questionnaire (see key themes)

There are currently 9 patients in the group.  Meetings are held monthly here at the surgery and are attended by the practice manager, doctors, nurses and other staff.

There are vacancies on the group from time to time.  Please ask to speak to the Practice Manager (Mrs Louise Davis) if you are interested in joining the group.

Key Themes Emerging From Patient Survey

We need to keep in mind that the aims of this survey were to improve communication between patients and the PPG, and to find out what are the most important issues for patients.  These aims were achieved.

The questionnaire was completed by 263 patients attending the surgery over a 2 week period.  The sample is therefore biased towards the more regular users, and some of the problems such as telephone contact with the surgery are therefore likely to be under-represented.

The main issues emerging are:-

• The telephone system is experienced as a problem.  A queuing system received significant support, but there may be other options to address the problem.

• The system of obtaining appointments and repeat prescriptions on-line is being significantly under-used.  Promoting and facilitating that system would reduce pressure on the telephone system. 

• Suggestions about dealing with missed appointments were divided between imposing penalties or some sort, and some form of reminder system.

• Help with accessing the website would be welcomed.

• The repeat prescription systems are widely used.  The major problems seem to be that people are not always routinely asked at pharmacies whether they require all the items.

• Although most of the responses expressed satisfaction with the current opening hours, a significant number expressed dissatisfaction.  (We need to bear in mind that the survey was conducted during opening hours).

• Many responders expressed dissatisfaction with the current waiting and reception area.  The main problems related mainly to size and lack of privacy.

• Self-help and other groups for patients.   A significant group of responders felt that access to information about these groups needs to be improved.

• In relation to the range of services on offer at the surgery, and any other issues, there were no major themes emerging from the survey.
